Scooter Boards and Their Use in Therapy:

Scooter boards are fantastic because they tap into a child's natural desire to move and play, making therapy sessions enjoyable and motivating.

Some of the key benefits are as follows:

Building Strength and Endurance: Propelling and controlling a scooter board is a fantastic workout! It significantly strengthens the muscles of the arms, shoulders, core, and even the legs, depending on how it's used. This foundational strength is crucial for everything from maintaining good posture to engaging in fine motor tasks.
Enhancing Motor Planning and Coordination: Navigating space on a scooter board requires significant motor planning – thinking about how to move the body to get where you want to go. It also heavily works on bilateral coordination (using both sides of the body together) and often involves crossing the midline, which is vital for many daily activities like writing and self-care.

Providing Rich Sensory Input: Scooter boards are a goldmine for sensory experiences! The movement offers vestibular input (to balance and spatial orientation), while pushing and pulling offers proprioceptive input (deep pressure to muscles and joints). This can be incredibly regulating for children with sensory processing differences, helping them feel more organised and calm or providing needed alerting input.

Improving Body Awareness: As children move on the board, they develop a better understanding of their body in space and how their movements affect the board's direction and speed. This enhanced body awareness is fundamental for motor skill development and safety.

Boosting Confidence and Self-Esteem: Mastering new movements and successfully navigating challenges on the scooter board can significantly increase a child's confidence and encourage them to try new things.

Developing Problem-Solving Skills: Maneuvering around obstacles or working with a partner on a scooter board naturally encourages problem-solving and flexible thinking.

Facilitating Social Interaction: Many scooter board activities are perfect for parallel or cooperative play, encouraging social skills like turn-taking, communication, and teamwork.

Using Scooter Boards in Therapy and Rehabilitation:

The beauty of the scooter board lies in its adaptability to target specific therapeutic goals:

Prone Progression (Lying on Tummy): This is a classic! Children lie on their tummies and propel themselves with their arms. This position is excellent for strengthening the upper body, shoulders, and back extensor muscles, which are key for good posture and fine motor control. We might have them retrieve objects, navigate obstacle courses, or even play games like "scooter board soccer" using their heads to push a ball.

Supine Progression (Lying on Back): Lying on the back and using feet or hands to push off walls or the floor provides different muscle engagement and vestibular input. It can be great for core strengthening and exploring movement in a different plane.

Sitting: Children can sit on the board and use their feet or a rope to pull themselves along. This works on core strength, balance, and bilateral coordination. We might use targets to push off from or pull towards.

Kneeling: Kneeling on the board adds a balance challenge and further works the core and lower body while still allowing for upper extremity propulsion.

Rope Pulling Activities: Tying a rope to a stable object allows children to pull themselves along the floor while sitting or lying on the board. This is a powerful way to build upper body and grip strength.

Obstacle Courses and Mazes: Setting up courses with cones, tunnels, or ramps encourages motor planning, spatial awareness, and problem-solving as they navigate through.
Partner Activities: Children can work together, pushing or pulling each other on the boards, which promotes cooperation and communication.
Target Games: Activities involving collecting objects scattered around the room or pushing items to a specific target area improve motor control, planning, and visual-motor skills.
Incorporating Fine Motor Tasks: We might have a child on a scooter board retrieve puzzle pieces or other small items from one area and bring them back to a table to complete a fine motor task. This combines gross motor movement with fine motor precision.
Sensory Regulation Breaks: For children who benefit from movement and deep pressure, a few minutes of scooter board time can be a fantastic way to help them regulate their sensory systems before transitioning to more sedentary tasks.
There are many opportunities and the possibilities are truly endless!
A scooter board is an invaluable tool in my therapy kit, providing a fun, engaging, and effective way to help children build essential skills and move towards their full potential. If you have any more questions, please don't hesitate to ask!
